The Preparation Phase is a 24h period before the actual start of the Alliance Wars that allows you to choose which heroes you wish to take into battle, to make sure all your alliance members are ready for war, to (re)assign alliance ranks, and to preview potential rewards you can earn in the Alliance War.
In short, it allows your Alliance to properly prepare for the upcoming War.
